The acronym NK stands for Nogometny Klub and the name Zeljeznicar actually means "the railway worker". The origin of its name, the club owns to the fact that it was originally founded by a community of railway workers.

Zeljeznicar is also know as Zeljo and is the most successful football team in Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since it’s inception thru the early 1990s Zeljeznciar was a leading member of the Yugoslav Prime League (Prva Liga).

Zeljo’s successes include winning a single championship while Bosnia was part of Yugoslavia and five titles in as a champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 1984/95 Zeljo made his biggest success in the European arena when it managed to fight it’s way all to the UEFA Cup semi-finals. It was defeated by Videoton (Hungary) in a shocker match at the Grbavica stadium.

As the image below presents, Zeljo traditionally plays in a blue-white kit with the team amblem attached to an inch above player's heart.
